Common Knee Conditions

Your knee is a joint you move every time you walk. Not to mention, it's susceptible to an injury whenever you fall. For these reasons and more, you could experience either an acute or chronic issue that affects one or both knees.

Fortunately, the physicians at Elite Physical Medicine, serving Mason, OH, Lawrenceburg, IN, Hebron, KY, or Batesville, IN, are available to assist. Before you visit, though, you may wonder what the most common causes of knee pain are.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis can affect your knee joints because of how much wear and tear they experience. This form happens gradually over time from repeated use. With this condition, you may experience pain or stiffness.

Bursitis

Each knee has five bursae, making bursitis a common cause of knee pain for our patients in Lawrenceburg, IN, and the nearby region.

These bursae act as cushions and reduce friction. They, however, can become inflamed and cause an issue known as bursitis.

Tendinitis

You have multiple tendons that go to the knee. They're cords of tissue that are like ropes. They connect your bones and muscles to allow you to move. As you repeatedly move it or move it in a manner that overworks it, this tendon could become inflamed. This is a painful condition known as tendinitis.

Sprain

You could sprain a ligament in the knee if you overstretch it. What happens is you tear the tissue.

A sprain may cause pain or swelling. Your knee may feel weak or like it's going to "give out" when you're standing on it since the ligament provides support for the joint.

Torn Meniscus

The meniscus in your knee is cartilage. It's rough and rubbery and protects the shinbone and thighbone from shock from one another.

It's vulnerable to an injury if you should happen to suddenly twist it when you're placing weight on it.

Whenever this cause of knee pain happens, you might feel a popping sensation. Swelling is possible, and so is stiffness.

This issue can cause pain, especially when you move your knee. Your knee could feel as though it's "locked" when you try to move it.

Kneecap Fracture

You could fracture your kneecap, also known as your patella, when you fall. If you break your kneecap, you may have bruising, pain, or swelling at the site. Moving the body part may be difficult or cause you pain.

Elite Physical Medicine, serving Mason, OH, Lawrenceburg, IN, Hebron, KY, or Batesville, IN, and the surrounding area, helps whenever you have knee pain.
